<dangermouse> okies, finally we get to do this :)
<dangermouse> ok, lets get started

Dangermouse:
State your real stats, ie. name, sex, age, hobbies, etc..

Cardiac:
Okay. Whole name?

Jason Hyde, currently 22, hobbies, Tracking and compostion on piano, art... mostly airbrushing and pencilling at this point and writing... I have a couple of quirkly hobbies I do to entertain myself on occasion like origami and reading and stuff...

Dangermouse:
Cool, different..

Cardiac:
I'm a different person. :)

Dangermouse:
Ok, so how/when did u get involved with the scene as a whole? Was it straight to ascii or something or? Let's go for a complete history here :)

Cardiac:
Ascii? hah... well.. lets see... I got started through a friend back in 86-87. he had introduced to the underground bbs scene dealing with the warez scene and from there I moved to the art scene when I ran into a AAA pack (I think the very first one back then..) and saw some of the stuff that they were doing so... I looked all around and hunted down a copy of thedraw and welp... that started it. You know the whole local thing...

Dangermouse:
What was your first group?

Cardiac:
My first group.. mmm... the first group was one that me and a couple of other locals banded together and formed called DiR (Digital Revolution). Since I happened to be the best at it, I was offered presidency.

Dangermouse:
That was an all ascii group?

Cardiac:
Well it was ansi back then... I don't think the ascii groups didn't come around until like 91 or so...

I could be wrong though. Remember, we're talking like early 97. :) uhm.. 87. I mean. :)

Dangermouse:
Ok, can you recall the groups you were involved from 87 to 97? Heh, this is like 10 years!

Cardiac:
Yeah.. Jan is my 10th year anniversity. :)

I've only been in the music/demo scene for 3-4 years. But I've been in the art scene for like ever.

Well. After [DiR] (we were elite back then), I got involved with one of the most powerful warez boards on the east coast (2nd only to the PITS... you know, the Hunble Guys peeps.. looong before the big scandal and bust) who just happen to have their own ansi group on board... (I forgot the name of the group name... Dream I think? nah... something like that... Radio Isotope (iodine's older brother) was the star artist in the group... Our two groups merged, and not having access to the outside art scene that had developed, I gave up the presidency of the new group NC-17(pronounced ANSI-17.. they were supposed to have 17 members, but I don't know if we ever had that many)

We had picked up a local that had a connection to the elite art scene (other than the former warez artists) by the name Gatekeeper. Gatekeeper talked to Force Ten and his group GRiM (Graphics Rendered in Magnifience) (and yes, back then, EVERY groupstood for something... it was 'leet). and we merged. Everyone from NC-17 was cut besides Radio, Gatekeeper, The Necromancer and myself. these was about 89-90...

Dangermouse:
Yeah, all the groups had the eLiTe letters too eh? :>

Cardiac:
We stayed as a group in Grim for about a month. During that time, Gatekeeper had buttered up The senior staff of iCE, and told us (radio and I) that Grim was merging with iCE. This wasn't the case though.

Force Ten and I talked about the situation years later and I got the story from him what really happened. AT that time, I wasn't calling LD and I wasn't able to follow up on the story, so I had to take His word for it. iCE had a better offer than Grim, and he told me and radio to iCE. Necromancer was left behind as a "reminder" to grim. Radio Isotope and I, along with Gatekeeper himself joined iCE, and Radio took the moniker of "Repete Ophender". soon after, Grim also merged.. and by then Gatekeeper was an advisor.

Dangermouse:
Yeah, what was the real story?

Cardiac:
The real story? oh... Gatekeeper basically used us artist to get a staff position. this was when the iCE staff sytem was still new and acid was the big boy on the block. During my run in iCE, 91-92 or so, I developed my rep for being an "Asshole".

I was abusive to iCE's staff, fellow artists... and in turn it spilled over to the rest of the scene. Ask anybody that remembered the height of my Career when I basically took over Midnight Sorrow's old bbs Network of CyberCrime Int'l Net ripping everyone apart... and everyone was flaming me and couldn't outright flame me back. so they were trying to be hostile and diss me back, and I was just going off. That's back when I ran CTE with Digital Interface, in 93, but that's jumping ahead a bit

Dangermouse:
So, we're up to 91-92 here then?

Cardiac:
I don't know why Mitch put up with it, but those was funny times. I even remember when everyone from ice and acid all teamed up on me and schooled me be good after 6 months of getting bashed.

I'd tell you what happened but that's a story in itself. :)

After a while, I started talking to rad man and talked me into joining acid... I had at that point always wanted to join acid because they were the biggest and best at the time... people in the PD scene heard of it... so you know, they were the best..

So of course, by now I was actually enjoying this whole asshole thing and i systematically pissed off the SS in ice... and they threatened to kick me out. when they threatened me, with a "fuck you" I left and defected to Acid. Which, I must add wasn't the easiest thing, but only recented I had started to draw again and they so how two of my ansis were coming out so they didn't want to kick me out....

So in mid-late 92 I was in acid... I released 2 ansis and two logos... 1 of which some people consider acid's best logo ever because it was really original. also with that release started my resentment towards my arch enemy at the time (Cetis) and w/ Rad man himself... because at the last minute I sent him a beta of the 2nd logo with out my name on it, and then I went and finished it and he released the unfinished one.

Dangermouse:
Haha.. That would've pissed old radboy off.. oh yes..

Cardiac:
So as a revenge tactic, I stopped drawing for a while. So running into 94, I didn't draw. When I finally started drawing again, everything with Cetis was full blown. he was calling my house harrassing my parents and I was harrassing him and Chris.

Rad Man finally kicked me out.. and did to me the one thing that had only used once before for Black Spyrit.. he Banned me from EVER rejoining Acid.

So. I was like.. well fuck it. I'll rejoin iCE and everything will be find and dandy... but unfortunately for me... I had really pissed them off so much from before, when I asked to rejoin they said hell no and I was stuck.

I was banned from Acid, and iCE refused to take me back. so I wandered around for a while... and finally I ran into a group that had recently formed. Tribe. I said I'd give it a try, because me and shihear were friends, and at this point in my life .

Dangermouse:
Basically you were your own worst enemy it seems?

Cardiac:
Basically I was, and am.

At this point in my life I was going through a lot. I had broken up with my long time first g/f whom I was madly in love and I was like fuck it. I was going to release the pics and drop out the scene. So I talked to Shihear. I told him I wanted a place to release and that i was only joining to release them and that was it. i was leaving the scene. this is also around the time internet started to become a presence in the scene.

He let me join, no questions asked, and I released two ansis including my best one. The Rose Garden.

Dangermouse:
F**K METALLICA ROCKS, ahem..

Cardiac:
I never left the scene though. I broken down and got an internet account and I hung out for a while. in '95... Massd and Nailz... and they asked me to join... not doing anything better, I joined as staff and served as advisor and I regulated the shrife and hostility (basically making them hate me more than they hated themselves kinda thing) and make sure it ran smooth. This group was Union. I think the 3rd and last reunion.

That fell abpart because of disputes between nailz and massd and me. so when I left, it fell totally apart. so for a year and a half later Deeply Formed Twilight... and I joined up because I was a cool guy, and where I was technically staff for the time I was in the group (And I won't tell you how many times I saved the group from coming apart at the seams the first couple of months) after a while there was nothing to do and well... I kinda idled about.

Recently with twilight dying and all, I reapplied to iCE because I had the urge to draw and release, they rejected me because of my flaky art releases... they were concerned about it. talk about the past coming to haunt you. :)

And that in a Nutshell is my whole scene history. From Digital Revolution to Twilight Studios.

Dangermouse:
Heh.. Whoa, man thats pretty much a history of the scene :)

Cardiac:
Heh.. well most of it... I didn't talk about the Acid and iCE merger and ICE:TNO or anything. :)

Dangermouse:
What are you doing these days, since Twilight has just died, and being rejected from iCE?

Cardiac:
Nothing. I just got rejected from ice... so I guess the art'll just sit there on my HD, until I get the urge to draw again, and then I'll reapply.

Dangermouse:
For someone thats been around so long, who do you think personally has the most for the scene -- say looking at groups, and people?

Cardiac:
Well.. I'd have to say, ice, rca and cia. ice because it's the leader with experience, cia because of it's determination and rca for it's raw talent.

Contributing wise... ice and acid... and all the other beginning groups like Dream, AAA, UAA, Grim, Nc-17, nation, gothic, union and the other groups that helped shape the scene.

Person wise... G washington, tempus, elmin, aphex, somms, quicksilver... all the masters (though some put me in that catagory, not for skill but because of my originality - but I don't)...

Dangermouse:
Where do you think the scene is at today? A lot of ppl seem to think the scene is dying, but I don't know if you read the maestro article, but I think we can regain its 'leetness'.. ?

Cardiac:
I didn't but... I agree. in a way it is dying.

Dangermouse:
Do you think in that way, the scene has long to live if we don't do something?

Cardiac:
Ansi is obsolete, ascii is going to be around unless the GUI becomes total, overwhleming the text... and everything ill be vga.

In it's current state, you can only delay it. they'll always be an underground art scene. but I don't think it will involve ansi. and eventually, I think the ascii scene is going to succumb to it also.

Dangermouse:
Ok, Last question: What do you think of Metallica?

Cardiac:
As a fan of Industrial and Metal as a whole... growing up on kraftwerk and ministry and on the metal end The Scorpions and Quiet Riot... I like metallica's older stuff. My opinion is they they're overratted, and the load/reload stuff is crap...

But I love the older stuff... ride the lightning, Master, and justice... being my favs.

Dangermouse:
Do you have a dog, if so, what is its name?

Cardiac:
Umh. I don't have a dog.

But I love cats because as creatures, they are graceful, but I don't own one unfortunately.
