this is another installment in some sort of series, of some undisclosed length, which will remain
as such so I don't feel stupid if i drop on numer 3 out of 7 or soemthing :)

anyways, this is pretty much just like my last text, except this one will be for the file menu..
go figure, message section, file section.. does anyone see a trend here? I don't. If you DO,
email me and tell me. And if i get even ONE "i see a trend.. you're STUPID" i am gonna flip out
and open fire on a busload full of buddhist monks.. don't test me, I _AM_ a card carrying memeber
of the USPS.

Anywyas, check this shit out, and use some of it. If you do, email me, and lemme know, because
it would be interesting to see if anyone is still running RG besides me and spence (of course we
all know who REALLY knows more about rg.. hehhe)..

... on with the show ...

---<< warning type actions

back up your ovr and exe. this is a must. if you don't, you might be sorry..
this shit is all worked out on 5-11.. they are not gurenteed, or even said to work with other
versions. if you don't grasp the principle enough to figure it out on other versions, find me
and i will do it for ya.

oh yeah, important: notepad will not display some chs, and instead display block type thingys.
be sure to chck the hex code (left column) with what you typed (right column) so that it is
right. if you don't do this, too bad, but i warned you.. probabaly you should check this out
in edit.com.

oh yeah, and please, don't use the ansis. any included are for example only. i use them to
clarify what i am talking about, but that does NOT mean i am letting you use them. if you do
use them, consider it ripping. that is all.

---<< tip 1: the file listings header header..
---<< zip: none

there are a few things that should be manditory you do before putting a bbs up. as a matter of
fact, there should be some law against idiots putting up boards anwyas.. but back to the
subject: file headers are a must. you know, alot of the modding done to rg is kinda stupid.
i mean, what was cott smoking when he came up with this? what moron takes a bbs source, changes
only a few things, and then keeps updating those same things while ignoring the complete lack of
built in configurability? i dunno, i'm rambling again. BUT, for file headers, he's whatca do:

this is really quick and easy. only a little hexing, so color configuration, and some art..

1) makeup your nice header. this is the important part ;)
anyways, i recomned around 6-8 lines overall. I put the %FB mci code on top, becuase you
can't use ansimation here, and becasue that is usually blank anyways. so put it there, and
don't put anyhting to the right. You might wanna pad it out if the names get really long, so
it doesn't skip down a line and fuckup and ansi. cut off the extra lines at the bottom too.
we will call it 'mh.ans' here.
2) load the ovr in yer favorite hexeditor..
3) search for anyhting in the file header (Description, File Name, Size, etc) untill you get to

there. the hexing is done. now for the really easy part.

this will enable the MSG header to display, but it won't do the trick alone
so you need the next step to do so...

4) go into renegade, and into your color configuration. modify "3. File Listings".
it will now show your header here, as well as in the file listings, so play with your colors
untill you get it right. I personally setting options A - F to blank, as in black on black.
scratch that, i STRONGLY recomend doing this, so you don't see extra stuff.

that is it. yeah, if everyone knew it was that easy, it would be common knowledge by now. the
way i did it here, hexing it twice, is a good idea, becuase this way it displays in both your
color configuration screens AND your file listings. you don't like it!? well _I_ think it's
pretty cool, ok!?? so butt out..

---<< tip 2: lightbar filep..
---<< zip: tip2.zip

this is a cool little thing, similar to the lightbar readp (surprise surprise...) that is often
skipped, yet is vital to having a bbs worth a rats ass.. at least if you're running rg anyways.
check it out:

1) extract the menu i included, and look at it. learn how it functions and get to get
comortable with single menu menus using acs functions.
2) you will need to make ansis.. i prefer making them with three lines.. the 1st is blank, the
second has some sort of a line type thing (to break it form the files) and the 3rd is the actual
lightbar. this ansi must be saved in no preparation mode.. as always, make sure to cut the
extra lines and the "[?7h" you will need as many as you have options on the menu (duh..). I am
not gonna explain more indepth, becuase i figure you know how to do up lightbars..
3) make a fpup.ans what this does, it move the cursor up to make the lightbar overlap. without it,
your cursor would keep moving down and the files will scroll off. all this is, is "" or
similar. that is the ansi code to move up.. the numeral is the numer of lines.. if the lightbar
ansi goes up a line to far, make it 5A, if it goes down too far, make it 7A, get it? do this
   in notepad.. its really easy.
4) make an ansi for the help screen. i personally do not use one, i figure if you don't know the
rg cmds, you can suffer, but most people want an ansi there.. so to make that, you would make
one called FILEPH.ans, which is default in the extend help field for the menu, or you could
append it onto the lightbar (not tellin how, figure it out and learn from it) and make it come
   up.

anyways, i don't have the patience or the time to describe this really in depth. it's difficult to
explain, so just look a the sample menu. use it, make yer own, i don't give. just don't say it's
yours, cause it ain't.

BTW, did anyone notice this was strikingly similar to #2 in the mldem1.txt??

---<< tip 3: find/list files menu
---<< zip: tip3.zip

ok, so here is a little do-hiky to like make it easier to search out file, and list them, and oh
yeah, it looks cooler this way. here goes. it's a little bit tricky to understand, but try to
follow:

1) unzip my example menu into wherever it belongs. this will make it a little quicker.

2) you're gonna need to make a few ansis for this.
   a) the main ansi/logo (sfile.ans) .. use it like a header.. a couple lines, nothing major.
   b) a main prompt ansi (sfilep.ans) .. to use my menu, it needs to look something like this:

	-+-- search method (s/string w/wildcard cr/quit) :

saving method: clear screen, then open it in notepad and cut off everything after the ansi
      ends, and i mean everyhting.

   c) an ansi to display when they hit "s" (sfilep2.ans) .. mine looks like this:

	 +-- enter string to find

it lines up with the + on the 1st prompt. there will also be an automatic <cr> added by rg,
and the default ":" thing to indicate where you enter text.
saving method: home cursor, then remove everyhting right up untill the ansi, and remove the
      [?7h too.

   d) an ansi to display when you hit "w" (sfilep3.ans) .. try:

	 +-- enter wildcard to find

same as with ansi c, it will <cr>, but it will not add the ":". |07: |04.
      saving method: same as "c"

   e) make an ansi to move it up one line (1up.ans) .. copy this to notepad:

that is it. save it as 1up.ans and you are done.
saving method: none. it isn't a real ansi.

3) get into your system config and string editor.
   a) modify string 4/C (page/string letter) to this %df1up%%dfsfilep3%
   b) blank out string 4/D
   c) modify string 4/E to read %df1up%%dfsfilep2%
   d) modify string 5/B to %df1up%
   e) modify string 5/C to : (yeah, just make it say ":"

that will display all the ansis. except for the sfilep.ans and sfile.ans, those are both in the
   menu.

4) get into your menu editor, and modify the file menu.

change the command "(F)ind Description - Search for text in descriptions and filenames" to this:

	1. Long descript :(F)ile Search
	2. Short descript:(F)ile Search
	3. Menu keys :F
	4. ACS required :""
	5. Cmdkeys :-^
	6. Options :sfile
	   Flags :None
	Q. Quit

now delete the cmd "(S)earch Filespec - Search areas for a filespec (wildcards accepted)"

that is it. you are done. this is like obv/2's file search. use it, damnit.

---<< tip 4: upload select lightbar
---<< zip: none

this is a quick and easy way to simplify uplaoding. this way, people have the chance to select
either a standard, specified upload, or a blind, random upload. instead of having to goto the
useless batch menu to get a blind uppie, one keystroke takes care of it all. do this:

1) make an ansi for your lightbar, anyhting. i don't give. you need two options: blind and
standard. put them anywhere you like. make yer hightlight bars, and then go to the next
   step.

2) make up yer menus, like a standard lightie. the commands you need to have for enter are:

	1. Long descript :standard upload cmd
	2. Short descript:
	3. Menu keys :ENTER
	4. ACS required :""
	5. Cmdkeys :FU
	6. Options :
	   Flags :(H)idden
	Q. Quit

  and

	1. Long descript :blind uppie command
	2. Short descript:
	3. Menu keys :ENTER
	4. ACS required :""
	5. Cmdkeys :BU
	6. Options :
   	   Flags :(H)idden
	Q. Quit

don't forget to stack a gotomenu (-^) main command after each, or else it will keep repeating
to the matrix instead of going back to the file menu. there is no need really for a quit,
becuase entering a blank filename in the standard uplaod, and hitting "q" in the blind upload
will abort automatically. or you cna put one, whatever, it's your bbs...
if you need anymore help on making a lightie, go somewhere else, and figure it out. i am not
here to help pd pups learn how to make ther bbs look more "/<-rad"

3) get into yer menu editor, and change the cmd key on the uplaod cmd to -^ and the options to
whatever you named the pre-matrix menu..

that is it. you are done. have good mosh pitting.

---<< tip 4b: protocol select ansi...
---<< zip: none

ok, i decided to throw this in as an afterthought, in case yoy forgot how or don't know how to do
this. ok, so go and get into the string editor, and edit string 3/H. change it to %dfprot% or
replace prot with whatever you wanna call it. i only put xmodem, ymodem, and zmodem on it,
becuase thats all people use, then i save it in clearscreen and make the cursor ansimate to
some sort of prompt area on the screen. did i mention you should use a 25 liner or soemthing
here?? There. half a mod :)

---<< tip 5: file base listings header/prompt
---<< zip: none

just because lang worked so hard to make rg so user configurable, we have these LOVELY one line
header wannabes everywhere. Well guess what: they look like complete crap, cott. here's another
header (and it's footer) that you can change to make yer baord look like less of a load of
bullshit.

ok, the first part of this tip, making and installing the header:

1) you need to make your actual header. just make something you like, i dunno, make it say "file
bases" if that makes you feel all warm inside.. decide how you want it to look with the field
names in there (base name, number, etc) but DON"T worry about getting these purfect right now.
you can always fix them later, so don't worry. anywyas, save this in clearscreen, and don't
forget to cut off ever singe last extra space at the end, and then <cr> one time to make sure
the cursor starts on the next line down. cut off that annoying esc[7?h or whatever it is at
the begining there. for this example, we will call it 'fah.ans'.
2) load your hexeditor. search for 'Num' or 'Name'.this one is tricky to find, because there are
about a million and one places you will find those two. I recomnd that when you find one, you
change the 'Num' to 'Bum' and then start rg and check to see if it shows up, and then if it
doesn't, do it all again, but anywyas, find something like this:

that knocks off the actual header hexing part. to make it display right though, you need to
kill off the old headers colors:

3) now go to the color configuration ("k" from system config..)..
take all the header properties (A, B, and C) and make them black on black.. that way, you
do not need to blank anyhting out in the ovr (which would make more work and take more time).
that will complete header installation. this took me longer to write up then to do <g>

now on to the second part of this tip, the prompt (aka "footer"):

1) make an ansi fer the prompt, like two or three lines, whatever.. we will call it "fhap.ans"
   in this txt.
2) load up yer hexeditor AGAIN (is this getting repetitive?) ..
   search till you find:

for this, i worked backwards, entering it like %, then p, then the h, etc.. then
esc code out the rest, so there is no fucking up.

thassal on this one, folks. oh yeah, this one will display in your color config, area listing, and when you pick areas
to newscan. so keep that in mind.

---<< tip 6: full screen uploading
---<< zip: tip6.zip

this one is gonna be a bitch and a half to explain. theres hexing, theres ansimation, it's all here. hopefully, it will
all go well. before we go on, lemme remind you to backup yer ovr fer this one, becuase there is high propensity to screw
up, and this is a nasty one to fix :) ok, here we go:

1) first you need to know about ansis.

fn.ans: this will be the ansi for the background, and also where the name is entered.
i used a 25 liner. don't worry about not having space to enter descriptions. this
will be taken care of in the next ansi. Just make sure this one has a
"enter filename" and a space for the 12 chrs possible in the file name.
save it in clearscreen and ansimate the cursor to the 1st space on the field for
           entering the name
fn2.ans: this will come up over the thing you choose. ok, now this one has requirement..
you need to have a field on the left hand side of this for entering the desctiprion.
it needs to be at least 52 colums l to r, and 10 top to bottom. that is the space
for entering the description only. anything else must be extra. ok, now, it must
start EXACTLY at the left, becuase rg doesn't like to move the field away from there.
You will have one colum on the left where the ":" will be displayed as you go down
a each line. other than that, you are home free. make sure that you know how to make
the blank field show up. save it in homecursor and ansimate it so that the cursror
is up in the upper left of your field. it's pretty simple, once you get past my
	    botched explination.

2) on to other part: hexing.. (oooooohh... scary...)

ok, take the ovr and find this:

---<< tip 7: "scanning for new files" ansi
---<< zip: none

this little number is easy as shit to makeup, even easier to hex in, and is kinda cool. i mean, how
many people do YOU know who have one of these in place? here goes:

1) make an ansi, a nice little header, a few lines, so it displays rapidly.. save it in clearscreen,
and use a little bit of ansimation to make a prompt, so that the file base name displays there
(cmon, you KNOW how to do this, but you hafta make the ansi store cursor position, if you fergot)
and stuff, you get me? anyways, its not a difficult thing to understand. play around with it. you
knoq where to find me if ya can't get it :) anwyas, we will call it "fs.ans" here.

2) load up yer hexeditor, and scan for "^1Scanning" untill you find EXACTLY this:

	5E FF 16 57 8D BE 5A FF 16 57 0E E8 62 FA 80 BE ^.W+Z.W.Fb+
	5A FF 00 75 15 8D BE 44 FF 16 57 BF 81 19 0E 57 Z.u.+D.W+..W
	9A 06 10 5F 10 9A A1 2E 04 01 C9 CB 0D 5E 31 53 .._....+-.^1S
	63 61 6E 6E 69 6E 67 20 5E 35 02 20 23 05 5E 31 canning ^5. #.^1
	2E 2E 2E 00 55 89 E5 B8 9A 02 9A 30 05 5F 10 81 ....Us+.0._.
	EC 9A 02 A1 12 70 89 86 6C FF C6 86 67 FF 00 A1 8..plg.

when you scann for ^1Scanning, it will come up 4 times. This will be the last. The 1st, i have NO
clue what it is for. I wasn't adventerous enough to find out ;). The 2nd is for wildcard searches,
the third is for string searches, and the last, well, the last is the one you see above, for the
golbal file newscan. You should put your header in each one, except for the 1st. It is always the
same. I am only gonna do the 1st one specifically becuase not only is it the one most will do, it
takes less time to do just one.

   anyways, change it to this:

	5E FF 16 57 8D BE 5A FF 16 57 0E E8 62 FA 80 BE ^.W+Z.W.Fb+
	5A FF 00 75 15 8D BE 44 FF 16 57 BF 81 19 0E 57 Z.u.+D.W+..W
	9A 06 10 5F 10 9A A1 2E 04 01 C9 CB 0D 20 20 20 .._....+-.
	25 44 46 46 53 25 20 7C 23 23 02 20 23 05 5E 31 %DFFS% |##. #.^1
	2E 2E 2E 00 55 89 E5 B8 9A 02 9A 30 05 5F 10 81 ....Us+.0._.
	EC 9A 02 A1 12 70 89 86 6C FF C6 86 67 FF 00 A1 8..plg.

								 ^^
ok, now, quickly note the "^^" above. in the 4th line of hex garbage, you will see the |## it
points to. change the ## to whatever pipe color code yer rg modding heart desires. make sure you
don't fuckup anyhting else. that is all of the hexing. easy, eh?

if ya wanna put it in the other 2 places (just not the 1st instance, remember..) you can use the
same ansi, or change it.. i didn't need to tell you that, but i did anyways. oh well.

anyways, thats it for that one. i hope you appreciate this, because, believe it or not, this was
actually a pain in the butt to figure out what each "^1Scanning" applied to.. use it. it's worth it.

---<< tip 8: pics as a file newscan matrix
---<< zip: none

yeah, uhm, repeat of this topic in the last text, only it was called somethng with message in it :)

anwyays, pic lightbars are a little different from the normal lightbars, becuase of scrolling and
stuff. not that much different, but placing the highlights might take a couple times of loading
it into notepad and hitting return or deleteing a line.

anyways, what are we gonna put on it? here's what i reccomend:

newscan files <-- cmdkey: FN options: G
set scan dates <-- cmdkey: FP options: none
select bases <-- cmdkey: FZ options: none
quit to main <-- cmdkey: -^ options: main
skip to files <-- cmdkey: -^ options: file

make up the nesicary lightbar menus using those.. you can do lots of stuff here. use yer imagination, after all,
i'm just some dumb modder.. what do i know about creativity?? ;)

so now, choose or make yer pic. I like ones with logos on the bottom, but do what you will.

now, you need the lineup required ansis:

1) scanf.ans, which is yer generic pic.. if it's 100lines or less, you can easily draw the optins
right onto it.. save this in clearscreen, and cut all the crap off.. if you don't, you will
need to fuck aorund with the ansis that home, to make them come up and line up right. if the pic
is over 100 lines, the simplest way to add options is to head to step 1b, but i recomend using
the scanf-a ansi regardless, instead of drawing on the pic.
1b) scanf-a.ans.. this is a homecursor ansi, that has the options on it.. figure out where it
should home over, and try to line it up. you need to cut the same stuff as with a normal
homeing lightbar to make it lignup and have the next homeing ansi line up too.. you will
need to load this one into notepad and insert and delete lines probably, untill it lines up
right.. don't worry, it will NOT hurt the ansi to do this.
2) make the highlight ansis, using the scanf-a if you have it, or by cutting the pic down to 24
lines. i warn you, again, using scanf-a.ans will make your life a whole shitload easier, but
if you don't want it, hey, it's your bbs.
3) scanf-b.ans.. this is the entire last 23 lines or so of the ansi, with the options ON it. this
will be displayed when the user has selected an option that comes back to the menu, that way
you won't need to have it display the pic again. you should start at 27 lines, then cut a line
at a time untill the scanf-b line sup with the options. DON'T insert lines in the highlight
ansis, as before.. insert and remove from the scamf-b.ans for this case.

ok, now, for how to make these display:
scanf.ans should come up before it loads the 1st option menu (1st line of lightbar)
scanf-a.ans should come up as the 1st thing on the 1st option menu. that is the ONLY place to
  display this.
you know where to put your highlight ansis, the 1st will be rihgt after the scanf-a, and the rest
will be first on their respective menus.
scanf-b should be cued by an 'enter' keypress, as in, enter activates 1st the optin you select,
then it finishes that and cues this, then it cues the next step, which MUST be redisplay the
highlight ansi. this needs to be done on ALL menus, after ALL 'enter' cmds.. obvioisly, you only
normally use enters and arrows on matrix, but in weird cases, this should be done after everything
except the arrows. i don't think i needed to tell ya that though.

ok, that is it, you are done. i suggest also makeing some little ansi tricks fer each option you put
so that you can put another enter cmd and have it display an ansi, then the desired function..
this will eliminate the hexing, and look cooler. more on that later.

---<< tip 9: other little ansis to throw in or consider
---<< zip: none

i have lots of random places i have hexxed in ansis, or put %dfs in my string.dat, or used a
stacked cmd on a menu with the -f before the actual function ..here are some locations to add
ansis at:

- display an ansi in the upload and download strings, as the "enter file name" and stuff like
that. these are strings 4/F and 4/G in the string editor.

- add an header when you hit list (enter file mask) becuase it's eleet like that...

- put a header on the "set scan dates" by stacking a cmd.. easier than hexing it :)

- make it so when you flag a file, it displays an ansi instead of a string. this is done by changing
string 5/D to %dfwhatever%, yeah. easy, but cool.

those are just a few quick suggestions, that are so simple the ydon't even need more explination.
there are plenty of strings to change and headers to add. my entire string.dat is all %df codes,
nothing but ansis. and hexing a string is so easy, i laugh at people who say rg sin't configureable
enough. use a few brain cells. at least its stable.
