File_id's are small texts attached to a file. This text includes the description of the file. It's quite simple when you need to add a file_id to a LhA-file. You can just include a file named FILE_ID.DIZ in the archive, but it's another story with .DMS and .EXE files. 8 Several programs were made to add descriptions to these types of files, and there were even some which could add file_id's to several formats. But there was one small problem. The text could not be wider than 44 characters, and not higher than 12 (8 on older versions of /X). Naturally you could just keep these restrictions in any ascii-editor, but it was still a pain in the butt to do this. Then came DIZ-Ed. A program which had a little window with the right proportions, thus making it impossible to make the logo/description to large. Additionally, it could add file_id.diz to the most used file-types, those being .LHA, .TXT, .DMS and .EXE. 0 2 I don't know if anyone was using the old DIZ-Ed, but I know that I did. It was almost a traders' dream coming true. Please notice that I use the word ALMOST. 5 While version 1.01 was more than adequate for editing File-Id's, there was still some things missing. For instance the opportunity to center a line. You had to do this by hand which was annoying. Another irritating thing was that when you were browsing through the Logo-list, you had to select the logo, in order to see it, thus deleting whatever was in the window. The last thing I can remember bugging me, was the fact that you pasted a file-id from PowerSnap into the DIZ-Ed window, it would sometimes mess it all up. Don't know why, it just did. 8 But all this is a thing of the past. Now we have DIZ-Ed V2.0. Let's start by looking at some of the new features. 2 You can now center a line! Hurrah! This was really needed. Clinging on to the main window, I can tell you that the design has also improved to a much higher level. The window does ofcourse tell you the cursors X and Y coordinates, and there is now no problems when pasting from PowerSnap (the Clipboard). You can easily transfer from and to the clipboard, and even send the current DIZcription to the serial port! So you don't have to snap or save the description anymore. A really nice feature. 0 5 Along with these features, there are some 'normal' ones, like the opportunity to set preferences in a nice WB-like way, all gadgets and windows (intuition rules :-). Typical for Nocturne is the option to change the programs' appearance, ie change the colours, patterns etc. Not particulary useful, but nice nonetheless. 8 One of the best new features is the option to have several Logo-collections by hand. Now each ascii artist can have his own collection. Example: You are about to add a logo to a file, and you really like Tango's logos. Well you could just choose Tango's logo-collection, and hey presto, all logos are (C) Tango. It is of course up to the user himself (herself? Naah, fat chance :-) to make these collections. I guess Nocturne COULD try to include a routine to recognize logos, for instance search the diz-collections for appearances of 'TGO' (which most Tango-logos have somewhere) but that is going a bit far. A couple of nice collections is included in the original archive, which make up for an ok start. 0 5 I could go on about all the other great touches like the opportunity to make the program resident, thus being able to recall it whenever you need it, or that you can open the program on any Public Screen (just a shame Jr-Comm doesn't use Public Screens), but instead I will just tell you that it is used by a lot of people, and deservedly so. BUT, lateron he mentions that they actually are V32.bis which means 14400 baud.
